This collaboration with PACKBAGS gave me the chance to approach coiling, a technique I’ve been exploring for years, from a new angle. Instead of using it for expressive objects, we set out to turn it into a functional bag module.
I wanted to stay close to basic coiling, using only rope and thread to make it work. While the result looks simple, the process involved a lot of experimentation and note-taking. I tested machine settings, needles, rope thicknesses, core materials, and threads until everything worked together. Some parts required the precision and speed of the sewing machine, while others had to be finished by hand.

The collaboration resulted in three basket modules, each handmade in my Rotterdam studio.

Through this project, I was able to show how a traditional technique can become something new without losing its simplicity.
